Golden Nuggets from the Mount
Over the past couple of months, I have had the opportunity to preach on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. I have truly enjoyed dissecting this passage and uncovering the “golden nuggets” of truth tucked within it.
Matthew 5:3–10 says:
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
One of the unique things about the Beatitudes is how they mirror the Ten Commandments. The first four, like the first tablet given to Moses, focus on our attitude and relationship with God. The second four, like the second tablet, focus on our attitude and relationship with others.
Charles Spurgeon once said, “Nobody ever outgrows Scripture; the book widens and deepens with our years.” And the great Billy Graham reminded us, “If you are ignorant of God’s Word, you will always be ignorant of God’s will.”
More than ever, we need to be in the Word of God. It is there that our attitudes are shaped, our hearts are softened, and our relationships—both with God and with others—are made whole.
Many Blessings, Pastor Chuck
